Dedh Ishqiya (2014) - Movie Review

(This was first published on Times City)

After a string of uninspiring and witless 100 crore sequels, here's a delightful and strikingly refreshing sequel, that's assuredly Bollywood's finest. Vishal Bhardwaj is back in his signature style. Every frame oozes perfection, shot like it were his last. And that's the beauty of his films. He takes his time to build that mood, tending to the tiniest of details, and getting the atmospherics in perfect sync with the story. From the direction to the cast, dialogues and the music, this comedy thriller has everything going for itself. You can't but be entertained. The first half is as pacy and fun as the second. It keeps you on the edge teasing you into believing the unimaginable and then gloriously bursting your bubble ;-) And in the end, it's all worth it.

As much as it is a director's film, Dedh Ishqiya wouldn't have been half as entertaining without our dedh-ly ensemble - Arshad Warsi, Naseeruddin Shah, Madhuri Dixit, Huma Qureshi and Vijay Raaz. Who could've better suited to play Begum Para than the graceful and gorgeous Madhuri Dixit? THIS is Madhuri's come back film. It addresses one of my quibbles with Bollywood failing to tap the potential and experience of our yester-year actresses. English Vinglish was such fine writing, presenting Sridevi like we've never seen before. Lets hope we see more roles written for them. Naseeruddin is a master of his art. Huma Qureshi already made an impact with her debut in Gangs of Wasseypur and in Luv Shuv Te Chicken Khurana and Ek Thi Daayan. She's as good this time. But for me, Arshad Warsi and Vijay Raaz stole the show. What fine performances! Their timings, their expressions were matchless.

Great start to 2014! Here's hoping there's more and even better in store for the year ahead.
